Falls Prevention Discussion

Apr. 30, 2024 8:35p

(WGTD)---Of all the things seniors should be worrying about, ranking right up there is the potential for taking a serious spill.

It’s something that the Kenosha County Aging and Disability Resource Center has been addressing for a number of years.

The agency employs a ‘fall coordinator.” Haleigh Couch makes home visits, conducts fall prevention classes and even follows up with patients who’ve fallen and have had to call 911 for help.

On WGTD’s Morning Show, Couch talked about the various hazards that exist for seniors in many homes. They include things left on the floor such as newspapers, pet toys and blankets hanging over the sides of beds. Wearing socks on carpet can also create the potential for a fall, as can medications that make people drowsy or affect the sense of balance.

Information about home visits in which hazards can be identified and rectified is available here.  In addition, there’s more about the ADRC’s fall prevention class, called “Stepping On.”
