Two people died in a head-on crash in Racine Saturday afternoon. According to a news release from Racine police, the 18-year-old driver of an expensive BMW was speeding and driving recklessly when the vehicle crossed the centerline in the 1200 blk. of S. Memorial Dr. and struck an SUV with a 46-year-old behind the wheel. Both drivers died. A juvenile passenger in the SUV suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The BMW was not stolen, according to a police spokeswoman.

Kenosha police successfully intercepted a reckless driver who was speeding on S. Sheridan Rd. mid-morning Saturday, although it took some doing. The 16-year-old driver tried to make a run for it, but the vehicle was slowed by the deployment of stop sticks by Pleasant Prairie police. The vehicle came to a halt across the border in Winthrop Harbor, where the youthful driver and four occupants were taken into custody.

Two children were rescued from a burning basement in Racine early Sunday morning. Firefighters responded to the 1200 blk. of Virginia at about 3:30 a.m. The two kids were pulled out through an egress window in the basement. A third made it out safely on his own. Moderate fire and smoke damage was limited to the basement. No immediate word on a possible cause. The fire department said the home lacked working smoke detectors.

In Kenosha, a mobile home in the 8700 blk. of Sheridan Rd. was destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. Two occupants were able to get out safely on their own.
