Crowd Angered by KSB Meeting Suspension

Feb. 20, 2023 8:15p

(WGTD)---A Kenosha School Board meeting that was called as part of the process to correct an election-related mistake never got off the ground Monday night.

School Board President Yolanda Adams refused to convene the meeting and walked off the stage because a few people in the audience of 100 were displaying campaign signs and refused to stow them. The meeting had been moved to the auditorium of Indian Trail High School and Academy in order to accommodate the anticipated large crowd.

Greeted by a chorus of boos and catcalls, Adams returned about an hour later to announce that she was suspending the meeting.

Most of those in the audience showed up because they were hot over the board's response to a mistake made in the wording of an election notice. After consulting with attorneys, the board announced earlier this year that it's course of action would be to require the third-highest vote getter in last year's election to step aside this spring. The faulty election notice had indicated that the seat was worth a three-year term when in fact it was good for only a year. The decision to stick to a one-year term puts the board's election cycle back on track.

The board member that's affected by all of this is Eric Meadows.

Meadows and two others then applied for the vacancy that was created.

The board was to have interviewed the applicants and filled the one-year term at Monday night's meeting.

No immediate word on what will happen next.

The last time things got testy at a board meeting Adams elected to hold the next one virtually. The issue back then was COVID-related.
