Carthage Launches $100 Million Capital Campaign, Reports Enrollment Growth

Aug. 8, 2023 noon

At a time when some colleges are shrinking in size and stature, Carthage College in Kenosha is on pace to record a record or near-record freshman enrollment this fall, and they’re launching a $100 million fundraising campaign. According to a news release, the money will be used to increase student diversity, allow the school to more nimbly develop new programs in nursing, pre-health, engineering, business and other high-demand fields; create endowed professorships in the liberal arts and sciences and upgrade Siebert Chapel and other facilities. The campaign already has snared major gifts, including a $5 million contribution from Carthage board chair Jeff Hamar and his wife Susan. Leading the campaign is Snap-on CEO Nicholas Pinchuk, who also sits on the board of trustees. The campaign comes on the heels of several years of sustained growth. The school’s first-year undergraduate enrollment rose 6.6% between 2019 and 2022. This fall’s incoming class is on pace to become the largest in the college’s history.

A Kenosha group that grew out of the 2020 Jacob Blake demonstrations three years ago has scheduled a news conference and demonstration for late Wednesday afternoon at the Kenosha County Courthouse. The topic—an incident that occurred last month in which a Kenosha police officer apparently repeatedly punched a suspect in the head. It happened at Applebee’s on 75th St. Officers had gone there to investigate a hit and run. A video that’s been circulating on social media shows police struggling to arrest a Black man who was holding a baby. Somebody grabbed the child, and the man wound up on the floor on his stomach with two officers over him. Judging from the movement of an arm and elbow, it appears that one of the officers repeatedly punched the suspect in the head. Turns out the man wasn’t involved in the hit and run. The police department is conducting an internal investigation. Tanya McLean of Leaders of Kenosha is expected to lead Wednesday's planned demonstration. She draws parallels between the Applebee’s incident and the shooting of Jacob Blake.
