$3 Million Uline Donation To Ease Housing Crunch in Kenosha

Sept. 1, 2023 4p

(WGTD)---Uline--the packaging materials company headquartered in Kenosha County--is prepared to donate $3 million in matching funds to the City of Kenosha to promote home ownership and strengthen neighborhoods.

Although details have yet to be worked out, the program is expected to lead to the construction of dozens of new single-family homes, and subsidies for buyers that qualify.

In order to receive the donation, the city must put up an equal amount. Federal COVID relief funds and revenue from tax incremental districts could be part of the mix, according to City Administrator John Morrissey. Also, the city is prepared to donate 30 vacant lots that it obtained over the years through tax delinquency and other actions, Morrissey said. The lots are scattered throughout the city east of Green Bay Rd.

A news release from the city describes the donation as a "once-in-a-generation investment." In thanking the Uihlein family, Mayor Antaramian said: "This approach to neighborhood revitalization is what leads to impactful changes in neighborhoods."

Said Elizabeth Uihlein: "Uline is proud to be a part of the Kenosha community. Many of our employees live here. Affordable home ownership is vital to those who want to live and work here."

The donation came about during discussions over Uline expansion in the area, Morrissey said.

It's expected to be formally accepted by the City Council next week.

Kenosha offers several programs that are designed to encourage and support home ownership, but there's nothing of this magnitude, Morrissey said. "It's a unique opportunity for the city," he said.

Morrissey estimated that the program, over time, could lead to the construction of 120 single-family homes.
