The book focuses on U.S. Marines stationed on Guadacanal late in World War II - and an extraordinary football game that was played there on Christmas Eve 1944t to help boost morale on the eve of the invasion of Okinawa. 65 gifted football players were involved in the game - 15 of them would lose their lives a few weeks later during the invasion.
