(WGTD)---A couple of major redevelopment projects in Kenosha are moving forward.
Mayor Antaramian says we should be hearing more about his downtown vision plan in a couple of months. "We're getting closer to coming back to the council with a proposal on that," he said in a phone interview. "But it's probably going to take another couple of months."
The original plan, as outlined several years ago, called for condos and apartments, a new city hall and a performing arts center.
The plan stalled with COVID and the 2020 civil unrest, and the chosen developer dropped out after financing fell apart.
Since then, the city has been working with a new developer.
Another top priority of the mayor is the transformation of the vacant land where Chrysler once stood into the Kenosha Innovation Neighborhood. The city has spent the last several years removing contaminated soil. The tract is now ready for redevelopment.
Construction on a replacement building for Kenosha Unified’s LakeView Technology Academy is expected to begin next year. The Kenosha City Council this week authorized use of money from two revolving loan funds to help finance the $18 million project. The school—currently located off of County ‘H’ in Pleasant Prairie—ranks near the top of area schools in standardized test scores. The new school will be built by the Kenosha Area Business Alliance Foundation and leased to K-U-S-D. Gateway Technical College will also hold classes in the building.
Construction of LakeView is expected to coincide with the installation of infrastructure in KIN that includes two main roads…the extensions of 56th St. and 28th Ave.
