(WGTD)---One-way streets in the greater downtown Racine area will start to disappear this summer.
It’s part of a three-year-old plan to make downtown Racine more pedestrian and merchant-friendly while at the same time improving traffic flow.
Although the work hasn’t started yet, crews are to begin the process this month of making the one-way Wisconsin Ave. two-way, from State St. near the bridge to 16th St. on the south side. That’s a nearly two-mile long stretch of roadway.
The project’s first phase will include adding traffic signal heads to some of the intersections. The second phase involves only allowing south bound traffic on the west side of the street. The conversion is expected to be complete by the end of May.
Later this summer, the city will convert Lake Ave. from a one-way northbound to a two-way roadway from 10th St. to Gaslight Drive.
In a related project, the city and state are planning to designate Marquette St. as St. Hwy. 32 as it moves through Racine. The idea is to move thru traffic out of the downtown area instead of having it run on Main St.
