Landmark Kenosha Restaurant to Close

Aug. 30, 2019 noon

(WGTD)---A Kenosha dining institution is closing after 60 years in business so its owners can enjoy retirement.

A post on the Facebook page of the Bartley House announced that the supper club's last night of service will be Sept. 20th.

Bartley O'Mara Sr. opened the restaurant at its current location at 1212 58th St. in January of 1959.

As the population and commerce center of the city shifted west, the restaurant--located along the elevated tracks amid a largely residential neigbhorhood--remained.

Over the years, the restaurant was a favorite for generations of Kenosha families that celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions at the restaurant. With the owners' irish heritage, the place was a focal point for the city's St. Patrick's Day observances.

The Facebook post announcing the closing was shared well over 500 times with more than 250 people posting comments. A post from a woman named Gloria DeMarco was typical. "My family and I have enjoyed going to the Bartley House over the years. I think of you as being such a part of Kenosha's history. Thank you for your excellent cuisine and the memories you have provided my family."

The original post indicated that the decision to close was tough but that the owners want to enjoy retirement. They thanked the community for its support and wished customers and employees the best.
