Carthage College Student Struck and Killed on Sheridan Road

A Carthage College freshman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Sheridan Road---near the school---Thursday afternoon.

According to an e-mail sent to students and faculty---the victim was identified as Griffin Schumow---an environmental science major---from Lindenhurst, Illinois.

Schumow was reportedly trying to cross the 4-lane road near the Smeds Tennis Center when he was struck by a northbound vehicle. There is no crosswalk at the location where he was struck.

The driver of the vehicle that hit him did stop.

Carthage President John Swallow said the school is working with the student’s family to determine the best way to honor his life.
