WGTD)---A building on Gateway Technical College’s Racine campus that at one time was under consideration for demolition may be in line for a new life as a training center for nurses.
The three-story, 1960s-era Lincoln building was actually inherited by the modern-day Gateway.
In recent years, design and structural problems limited its use.
A committee made up of representatives of Gateway’s board of trustees and administration, and a representative of city government, is recommending that the college spend $7 million to gut the place, remodel and turn it into a center for nursing instruction.
The committee notes that the school’s nursing program, currently located in Kenosha and Burlington, has a waiting list, while the demand for nurses remains strong.
In coming weeks, the panel’s recommendations will be considered by the full Gateway board.
A positive recommendation would send the matter to the Wisconsin Technical College System for review.
If all goes as planned, the new nursing center would be open by spring of 2022.
