(WGTD)---There are new developments to report in Kenosha's slow-moving downtown redevelopment plan.
The Plan Commission will consider not one but two proposed apartment buildings.
A ten-story mixed-use building targeted for a mostly vacant tract of land just west of 6th Ave, and north of 55th St. was always considered to be the first component to be tackled.
The Commission on Thursday will consider a zoning change request for that project and review preliminary plans.
However, construction of a second apartment building is expected to leap-frog the first on the construction timetable.
The favored project is to be located on a block that now contains a city-owned parking lot and an abandoned bank drive-thru and is kitty-corner to the first. The second project is a smaller, five-story building with 158 apartments with two levels of parking, one underground and the other at surface-level. The living units will include a mix of studio, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units.
Development Department Deputy Director Rich Schroeder tells WGTD the developers hope to break ground in late summer.
The ten-story building, as envisioned, still includes a 3-story parking garage, first floor retail and co-working spaces and seven town homes in addition to 188 apartments.
Also on Thursday, the commission is expected to consider a request from the developers to put up a sign announcing the projects.
