Kenosha---A vacant, south side building that once housed a grocery store is being given new life as a self-serve storage facility.
The building once was a Super Valu and subsequently a Festival Foods until it was replaced with a new structure built just to the east.
Now a Canadian firm wants to divide the vacant building off of 80th St. into storage units of varying sizes. As many as 1,000 would be available once a planned second floor is added.
Unlike other storage facilities, these units could only be accessed from the building's interior. Access would be limited to between the hours of six in the morning and ten at night.
The city's Plan Commission--meeting Thursday evening-- recommended approval of the project.
Conditions include tearing up part of the large parking lot in front of the building and replacing it with landscaping.
