(WGTD)---UAW Local 72 apparently is getting ready to sell its headquarters building on Washington Rd. in Kenosha to a local development firm.
Although union officials aren't commenting, documents on file with the City of Kenosha indicate that the building is in the process of being sold to Bear Development.
Company president S.R. Mills is scheduled to go before the city's License and Permit Committee Monday night to apply for a beer and liquor license. The one-year license would allow Bear to continue renting out the hall.
Local officials said last week that a "moving" sale will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9-3 each day. Bids will be taken on a number of different items.
According to online records, the building was put on the market last summer.
Local 72 President Peggy Applegate-Peplinski wouldn't comment Friday on the future of the property, saying that nothing is finalized.
Local 72 is almost as old as Kenosha's auto industry itself. Founded in the 1930s, the local represented thousands of workers at Nash Motors and later AMC and Chrysler. These days, it's mostly retirees that are served.
Even though it lost most of its active worker membership with the demise of auto assembly and the engine plant, the local kept the building with its large hall open for various community events.
