New 'COP' House, 'Creative Crawl', Highlight Season's First 1st Friday

May 2, 2025 11a

(WGTD)---Downtown Racine’s ‘First Friday’ promotion is returning for the season tonight.

In addition to the usual various special promotions offered by downtown businesses, the work of Racine’s arts community will be on display in what’s being billed as a “Creative Crawl.” 14 separate locations will be established where patrons can view exhibits and demonstrations, participate in art-making, meet artists and authors and listen to music.

To add to the fun, people who visit all of the locations and collect stamps as proof are eligible to win prizes and gift cards.

Open for inspection will the Racine Police Department's latest "COP" house. "COP" stands for Community Oriented Policing, a strategy that was developed in Racine in the early 1990's and became a national model.

The new house is located in a Main Street storefront a few doors north of Monument Square, and is meant to address the concerns of downtown businesses and the people who frequent the area.

It's the city's 7th COP house.

The downtown COP house was made possible in part by grants from SC Johnson and the Racine Community Foundation.

Racine Mayor Mason and representatives of the Downtown Racine Corporation and Racine Area Manufacturers and Commerce were among those who spoke at a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week.
