(WGTD)---It was 25 years ago that members of Kenosha's Mahone family, with the support of several community and business leaders, decided to extend the community service legacy of Mary Lou and Arthur F. Mahone by creating a foundation primarily designed to award college scholarships.
The milestone will be marked In the fieldhouse at Carthage College Friday night with the annual "Reaching for Rainbows Pursuit of Excellence Scholarship Gala." New scholarships worth more than $500,000 will be awarded to 36 high school students from Kenosha and Racine. This is the first year in which scholarships are being given to students from Racine schools.
Altogether, more than 400 scholarships have been handed out to deserving students from lower-income families over the past 25 years.
The "Reaching for Rainbows" reference sums up what the Mahone Foundation is all about. "You're reaching for the other side of that rainbow and it's nothing but a pot of whatever you want it to be," said sibling Tim Mahone on Thursday's Morning Show. "And we're investing in that," he said.
25 of the students to be awarded scholarships will receive Mahone Foundation Career Exploration Organization scholarships. The 11 others will receive scholarships from Foundation education partners Carthage College and Herzing University.
Also appearing on Thursday's Morning Show was Ardis Mahone, Tamarra Coleman and Kalon Bell. Bell was a 2012 Mahone scholarship winner. Coleman sits on the committee that reviews the scholarship applications.
