(WGTD)---Kenosha Unified Superintendent Jeff Weiss is taking the high road in reacting to Tuesday's referendum defeat.
A proposal to allow the district to exceed state revenue caps by $23 million in each of the next five years to close a projected $19 million budget gap in the first year lost by an eight-point-margin.
In an email, Weiss said the proposals was "not the right solution at this time." He goes on to say that the 'no' vote, in his opinion, "does not diminish our community's strong support for our schools."
The defeat, he said, leaves the district with little choice but to consider reducing programs, services and staffing.
The district will also be closely watching deliberations in Madison over the next biennial budget and what that might mean for state funding of public education.
State revenue and levy limits have not kept pace with inflation.
