KUSD Cybersecurity Update; District Formally Hires New Superintendent

Sept. 29, 2022 8:45a

(WGTD)---All online Kenosha Unified programs and applications are expected to be brought back up by the end of Thursday as the district recovers from some type of cyber security incident, according to district spokesperson Tanya Ruder.

"Thanks to the diligence of the KUSD security team, we are in the process of returning to business as usual and will bring all programs and applications back online today," Ruder said in a news release issued Thursday morning. "We appreciate the support and understanding of our students, staff and families," she said.

The breach prompted the district to quickly take down the services on Sunday. Teaching and learning resumed Monday morning as scheduled without the benefit of computers.

Ruder said the cyber security company called in to help the district cope with the interruption will continue to investigate along with law enforcement. The ongoing review is being done in part to "mitigate any potential impact to data," she said.

Ruder promises to share any new developments with students, parents and staff.

The internet security problem struck just a couple of days before the school board formally voted to hire a new superintendent.

The vote Tuesday night to appoint Jeffrey Weiss was unanimous.

Weiss is a former Racine Unified administrator who holds degrees from UW-Parkside and Carthage College. Weiss comes to Kenosha after having served as superintendent of the public schools in South Milwaukee.

Weiss, who will take over for interim superintendent Beth Ormseth, was at the school board meeting but didn’t speak.

Interim Superintendent Beth Ormseth will return to her old job as top administrator at Lakeview Technology Academy.
