Kenosha Cabling Project Continues; Unknown On Exactly When It'll Go Live

May 6, 2024 12:40p

(WGTD)---A $100 million project to install fiber optic cable in front of each home and business in Kenosha is on track. But there’s still no word on just when potential customers will be able to take advantage of the service.

A little over a year-and-a-half ago, the city and SiFi Networks announced the project. It involves burying miles of cable in order for vendors to provide the most reliable and speediest internet service.

A SiFi spokesperson said last week that the company has installed over a million feet of cable, and that the city is expected to be completely wired by the end of next year.

Many Kenoshans have already been inundated with offers received in the mail from T-Mobile, the vendor that’s signed on to provide service. The company is inviting potential customers to join a wait list.

But neither SiFi or T-Mobile is saying just when all or part of the system might be activated.

An announcement in Kenosha last fall from a top SiFi official that service would start to be phased in before the end of last year turned out to be premature. A local source tells us that an equipment supply problem may have prompted a change in plans.

T-Mobile is advertising that basic internet service via fiber will eventually be available for as little as $55 a month.
