(WPR, AP, WGTD)---A recount is expected in Tuesday’s state Supreme Court race.
With some 1.2 million votes cast, Brian Hagedorn was leading Lisa Neubauer by about 6,000 votes, with a handful of precincts yet to report.
Neubauer’s husband is a former state representative from Racine, and her daughter, Greta, currently serves in the Assembly. The Neubauer’s watch party was at the Red Onion Café in Racine.
The campaign called it quits for the night around 11. Greta Neubauer told a crowd of about 150 supporters that the campaign was still hopeful. "We need to make sure that the voice of every single Wisconsinite is heard," she said.
The campaign is expected to ask for a recount.
The winner will replace longtime Justice Shirley Abrahamson to serve a 10-year term.
Neubauer did poorly in her own backyard. She lost Racine County by about 5,000 votes, and in Kenosha County, she lost by four percentage points.
Neubauer outraised Hagedorn by significant margins and got strong outside help as liberals hoped to position themselves for a court takeover next year. That’s now in doubt. Hagedorn contended with attacks over conservative writings from his past.
