(WGTD)---Even though both the Kenosha City Council and the Kenosha County Board have green-lighted the Menominee Indians’ Hard Rock casino, Gov. Evers still isn’t saying whether he’ll approve the development.
Evers was at Gateway in Kenosha Monday addressing the shortage of health care workers.
Afterward, Evers was asked whether he’s made up his mind on the casino. "I can't talk about that. I probably could but I'm not going to," Evers said with a smile. "My role in that is way at the end. We will see what happens."
The matter is now in the hands of the U.S. Interior Department's Bureau of Indian Affairs. The tribe is hoping for a decision by the end of the year.
If permission is granted, then it would be Gov Evers’ turn. But he would have up to a year to render a decision. Evers told reporters Monday that he's been following developments.
The Kenosha casino proposal has drawn opposition from several quarters, including from an attorney representing the Potawatomis, the tribe that runs a casino complex in Milwaukee.
