Candidates Line Up for Seats in the Wisconsin Legislature

June 2, 2024 12:05p

(WGTD)---Monday is the last day for filing papers to get on the fall ballot in Wisconsin.

Redistricting and retirements have sparked a broader interest in legislative races in the WGTD listening area.

The largest number of candidates to have filed in any one district is in the 65th Assembly district where Democrat Tod Ohnstad is retiring. As of last Friday, three Democrats had declared an interest in running. They are Kyle Flood, Atifa Robinson and Ben DeSmidt. They’ll face off in an August primary. The lone Republican is Brian Gonzales.

In the 64th Assembly district, Republican Ed Hibsch is running for a third time and will be trying to defeat incumbent Democrat Tip McGuire.

In the 32nd district, incumbent Amanda Nedweski has picked up opposition from Democrat Michael Dhindsa.

Moving to Racine, two Republicans have declared an interest in the seat currently held by Democrat Greta Neubauer. They are Christian Kuether and David DeGroot.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has picked up intra-party opposition from Andrew Cegielski.

In the 62nd District, the August primary will decide who fills that seat. Just two Democrats are on the ballot: Angelina Cruz and Scott Kinderman.

In the 31st district, two incumbent Republicans will face off in August: Tyler August and Ellen Schutt. The winner will face Democrat John Henderson.

A word of warning: As of last Friday, some of the candidates mentioned had yet to submit nominating petition signatures or were waiting to have their petitions certified.
